Wigtown Victorious

Wigtown make the man advantage count.
This afternoon saw opponents Upper Annandale FC travel from Moffat to face us in a first round tie of the Potts Cup. Wigtown got off to cracking start when Davy Nish got on the end of a cross to nod into the goal to put us 1-0 up after 10 minutes. Uppers would then get themselves back into the tie when they equalised on the 25th minute mark, after some good build up play. They would then go on to score a second to take a lead of 2-1 into half time.
The second half would shape up to be an exciting half of football. Our boys showing a great amount of fighting spirit engaging in some fierce battles all over the park. The first 30 minutes of the half was real end to end stuff, both teams battling hard and creating chances. Uppers would be reduced down to 10 men after a player received his marching orders after 2 yellow cards. With the game nearing an end and Wigtown on the attack, Uppers would give away a foul on the edge of the box. The resulting free kick from Connor Cluckie and a fumble from the goal keeper lead to a Wigtown leveller. Setting up for a very nervy last 10. Uppers would crank on the pressure and push hard. This would only be added to when Wigtown also had a man sent off for his second booking, but we showed some great resilience and held strong to take the game into extra time.
The heavy pitch after a considerable amount of rain this week wouldn't help the tired legs which started to appear on both sides as we went into the first period of extra time. This made for a fairly even half.
The second period of extra time was shaping up in a fairly similar fashion, until a second Uppers player saw red. Wigtown started to make the advantage count, although we made it hard at times. But a Robert Dargie break down the right wing saw him release a cracking cross come shot, from about 5 yards outside of the box that looped over the keeper into the far corner. With minutes remaining "old han" Roddy Cooksley got onto the end of a cross to slot home the fourth for the win.
Final score 2-2 Wigtown win 4-2 after extra time
