Debutant sends visitors into tailspin to claim victory

By the time the final ball was bowled in yesterday’s home opener, 20 wickets had fallen for a total of just 104 runs. The scenes were memorable, especially for debutant Tim Opie, who claimed the winning wicket with the very last ball of his 14 over spell.

Tim, who is from Australia, and playing his first game in the UK, found his length early and claimed figures of 6-23 off his 14 overs, backed by by excellent spells from Jags 2-3 off 4 and Jake Woodhouse 1-14 off 9. Together they built pressure on the opponent and pulled off a seemingly impossible victory.

Credit to the groundsmen for getting the pitch ready when many other clubs have been forced to postpone their matches. Despite glorious sunshine, the pitch was slowed a bit by moisture under the surface and a combination of tricky batting conditions and tight bowling from both teams ensured a nailbiting game.

In truth, the home side were not expecting victory defending such a low total, but the squirrels have been here before and have a built recent history of winning games in this fashion in the past 3 seasons.

Belief and energy, combined with some pressure catches and patient bowling ensured victory and a fantastic start to our push for promotion.

Training will continue on Thursday and we look forward to our next fixture against Maritime away where we can expect the return of a couple of big bats to our lineup.
