WPRFC What’s On this weekend..

By James Neill

Last home games of the season this weekend with our 1st, 2nd & 3rd teams all at home with 3pm KO.

Saturday 13th April

It will be a great day of Rugby and the games coincide with our players reunion and end of season celebrations. A great day to come down to the club to watch and catch up with old friends.

1st Team
Home v Liverpool Collegiate, 3pm K.O.

Liverpool’s form has picked up since we beat them 45-20 earlier in the season. They are 3rd from bottom of the table. They will hope to move above Sefton by beating Park to ensure that they do not get relegated. This will mean that they will be playing to win. We have over the last couple of seasons had some excellent games with Liverpool who joined us in getting promoted from South Lancs /Cheshire League 2 last season. While we have won the last four games against Liverpool the teams have always been closely matched and we expect this game to be the same. After this weekend Park will be selecting a squad for the Cheshire Bowl final and many players will be wanting to put in a good performance to cement a place in the 22 man squad for the final.

Last weekend the 1st team produced an excellent display to defeat 3rd placed Glossop in the League 36 – 25. Another of our promising Colts side, Jamie Hawes, made his debut and scored an excellent try. He is the 4th Colt to be included in the 1st XV this season and we are starting to get some real competition for places in the 1st team.

2nd Team
Home v Northwich, 3pm K.O.

The Northwich website brags that in the last 5 meetings between the second teams they have beaten Park with a cumulative score of 225-63. Hopefully this Saturday will see a different outcome, but Northwich who are 4 places above Park in the league table, inflicted a heavy 66 – 5 defeat on Park in the opening game of the season so no one will be under any illusion that this will be a tough game. The 2nd team form continues to improve as does consistency in selection. A few more attending training would have made a huge difference to our performances during the season and recent Home wins against Chester and Liverpool show that our league position does not truly reflect the ability of our second team.

3rd Team
Home v Congleton, 3pm K.O.

We lost on the opening day of the season 19-18 and have struggled this season to field a consistent side. On the occasions where we have been able to field a full squad we have been competitive although we have only managed to win a couple of games all season. Hopefully we can end the season with a win.
This weekend we have over 60 players to select from for our 3 senior teams (still over 40 who are not available) and we have 10 Colts available which not only boosts player numbers but indicates a bright future across our senior sides with M&J sides at every age group, who will produce senior players every season.

To assist in the transition from Junior to adult rugby we will be introducing some permanent Coaches to our Senior & Junior Colts teams from next season. Our aim is to have Colts coaches who remain with these age groups and assist players making the step up from junior to senior rugby.
