Sunshine and hail
By Dennis Geary
u15s: Crewe & Nantwich 7 - 15 WPRFC
The team had a very good away game against a strong Crewe & Nantwich side on a large and bouncy 4G pitch at Reaseheath College. Repeated long periods of balmy sunshine followed by hail meant that weather conditions had to be taken into consideration, too.
The game was clearly won on defence, especially in the second half where C&N spent quite a bit of time camped inside of Parks’ 22. By contrast, virtually all of the first half and the latter stages of the second half were spend inside of the opposition’s 22, making their life difficult. The first half featured a lot of good forward play interrupted by wide ball movement to confuse C&N and gain further territory. Much of the second half was pure forward play, marked by a lot of back-and-forth between the sides.
The forwards fought hard in attack and defence, with all three tries coming from dogged forward play switched quickly to the backs.
The first try was a DanH mid-range run through the middle following phase after phase of hard yards. He still had two players on his outside, if he needed them, as the touched down.
The second try, came after similar sustained forward efforts. AlexDK took a quick penalty and ran from the 22, sucking in the opposition, before passing to Liam who placed the ball over the score line.
The third try came after relentless forward play and a brief loss of possession. Elliot made a great pick-up on the run from halfway and started a great looping sprint. He passed to Liam who panicked the remaining C&N players before spinning the ball to MJ who ran about 25 yards to the whitewash.
All-in-all, a game the team, especially the forwards, should be proud of. The team had many scoring chances which were thwarted by the opponents. Frankly, the points difference should have been much greater, but 7:15 will have done on the day.
Bruce and James had good games, launching themselves at the C&N lines again and again. DanM had great tackles as well as his fair share of pick and gos. Lewis was relentless, being taken to task by the ref towards the end for sticking up for a team mate. Ollie, Jamie, AlexP, Frankie, Adam and Tyler had great games in all areas. Henry made himself conspicuous by sprinting out of rucks with the ball in hand, making yards.
A good day and a great platform for the rest of the season.
Scorers: DanH (x1 try), Liam (x1 try), MJ (x1 try)
