A strong performance to the 'bitter' end!

We met our match in a very exciting morning of rugby.

Thank goodness the weather this week improved at the right time albeit cold, but no panic the replacements have new fantastic sub suits don't they Chris!! lol

GAME 1: We started the first game very strongly in particular in the ruck when we continued to recycle the ball and phase after phase of play continued, Macc didn't touch the ball at all, but their defence held strong. Joe R kicked a nice grubber kick through the back line and the ball was bouncing chaotically and as a result a knock on by Macc. Scrum down, good strike by Lucas, ball from Thomas to Joe, china ball already called and the ball was shipped quickly across the back line from the right touch line for Liam to score on the far left side touch line - a fantastic well worked try. A brilliant team try as most of the players touched the ball in order for Liam to finish it off. This continued to be a very tight game as it always is against Macc, who were beginning to dominate in the ruck area, as was the case all morning. Liam time after time made try saving strong tackles as this prevented the first wave of attack, unfortunately the Macc forwards ran the channel one ball to score to level the game.
At half time the team talk was to increase the defence line speed to meet Macc far more quicker on attack and not to wait for them to arrive, Pressure is the key in defence.

The second half was like the first, but now Macc were far more aggressive and up for the challenge. A real tug of war ensued and then a moment of brilliance and vision. We were on the attack, the forwards ensuring quick ball at the ruck and some excellent passing into space, then Joe R looked up and noticed a small spot of space, chip kick and chase, the ball beautifully bounced back up into Joe’s hands and try number two scored. Then Macc reacting like a wounded animal maintained the pressure, another excellent tackle by Liam but Macc had the numbers to score their second try. The game finished level 2-2 which was a fair reflection.

GAME 2 focused on the ruck, then continued strong runs by Mills, Alvaro and Tom N kept the pressure going. Joe took a nasty knock to his knee, Archie moved to 10. Then great lines of running by Donnie and Tresor, then pop pass to Harrison to score try number 3. KO received by Park knock on, Macc capitalised to score try number 3 all level. Then Will quick thinking from a free pass, launched into attack and Macc didn't react quickly enough and couldn’t stop Will to score try number 4. Now 4-3 to Park half time reached. We just needed to do our basics well to maintain this strong performance.

The final period was another tight affair, both sides making the same mistakes, but we were to strike first a lovely high kick by Archie put Macc under pressure, Lucas leading the chasing line, turn over ball, again the ball passed down the line for Alvaro to charge forward and pop pass to Liam to score no 5. By now Park had suffered several injuries, Tom, Max and Jacko bruising to head, arms and wrist. We had to make significant changes to cope with this. Harrison moved to full back, JJMc on for Tom and to be fair the team didn't lose its shape too much. The final minutes of the game Joe R returned to the field, and Park on the attack to try and increase the lead even further, but a stray pass in the back line enabled Macc to score an interception try. Scrum to WP, another good strike, ball to Will pass to Thomas J a good aggressive run forward, Macc were laying on the ball and getting in the way off their feet, ‘professional foul' called! Park penalty and once again quick thinking by Will pop pass to Lucas who broke the defence line and then pass to Harvey R to score try number 7.

The final score WP 7 - Macc 5.

There were five or six strong performances today but Liam’s performance was special, in both attack and defence, in particular his safe hands, reliability at full back and the one on one tackles. Well done Liam.

The teams ATTITUDE was excellent throughout and it is this that played a significant part in the way we played, we met our match today in a very exciting morning of rugby. Well done and look forward to seeing you all on Wednesday.
