A superb team effort and raring to go for the Cheshire Cup!
By Sandy Rees
It was a far cry from the wet and miserable conditions only a month earlier as we were blessed with some long awaited warm conditions. It was so sizzling that the sun cream was being slapped on, with Head Coach Reesy having to cream those ears!
Team; JJP, Thomas C, Rhys, Ewan, Freddie, Ben, Hary A, Harvey R & Thomas R, Harvey R - coached by Sandy & Chis R
This team got off to a great strong start from the set up with a lovely run & try scored by Harry A on first touch of the ball by Park. Brilliant!. Then as a result of great rucking from JJP and pass to Freddie to score no 2. This team were on fire or so we thought but then due to missed tackles Wilmslow broke through to score. But then we came back from kick off & pass to Thomas R who ran through their defence to score try no.3 but again we let our guard down and Wilmslow scored but then another strong run by Thomas R to score try 4, but despite good tackles Wilmslow scored twice to level at half time. There was some fantastic play in this first half and dfence was good and the team all helped to score those 4 trys we just needed to move up in the tackling. Second half and Wilmslow scored straight off by a missed tackle . We then had an out of touch ball and Wilmslow made a run for it but Ben was on his heels and launched himself right on their touch line at him to bring him down and by doing do hurt himself ! We then had the ball Thomas R made a lovely pass to Thomas C who made a great run full length of pitch to score, quickly followed by Thomas R to score again. Then a sneaky quick run by Wilmslow when we were not ready and they scored and then a 10 sec last play all on their touch line whcih went on for over 30 seconds to score gain made it a final score of 6/6 draw !
The support play and tackling for this team were fantastic but we needed to play with smiles on their faces not looking worried! Yes there some missed tackles but very good play.
Game 2: Our tackles in this game let us down slightly by grabbing shirts and not legs ! So Wilmslow were first to score this time but then Thomas R once again charged through to score. A couple of high tackles by Wilmslow and it was Parks ball but then we made a mistake by kicking ball whilst in a tackle so Wilmslow ball and some more silly mistakes led to Wilmslow taking advantage & scored. KO Freddie made a lovely run and step ins to score a lovely try no 3 and so at half time we were 3/2 up.
Team were told we needed more intensity and remind to get round the legs not grab shirts!
Second half and Wilmslow scored as got through our defence. We then had a tense 5 mins on Wilmslow try line with Park putting in tackle after tackle by Harvey R, Ewan and Thomas to prevent Wilmslow from scoring but Park couldnt sustain it. And then a kick to Thomas R by opposition brought him off the pitch and the game levelled at 3/3 another draw!
This team played well against a bigger opposition to get 2 x draws and everybody played their part - so well done.
MOM - Thomas R for leading his team as captain and some lovely trys and Ewan for his strong play in defence and not afraid to get in there.
Team: Archie, Alvaro, Scarlett, Tom, Will, Joe, Harry P, Max, Jack M
Both teams were clearly up for the challenge as there was fierce battling from the off, with some crunching tackles and excellent offensive and defensive play. Park continued to display excellent rucking, but what was pleasing to see was a sense of passing the ball along the line. There was excellent defensive play when on several occasions the Park players pushed Wilmslow from the try line preventing Wilmslow to be first on the score sheet. The first try came from a tackle by Alvaro and a snatch of the ball, leading to a pass to Yacko who then passed it to the speedy Harry P who raced down the line to score. Wilmslow showed determination and were showing no signs of retreating. Wilmslow were able to equalise when following a long pass from a Park player the ball was intercepted by an opposition player to score.
The second half continued in the same vein with some examples of passing along the line and support play. Again there was some powerful tackling on both sides. Tom N showed his strength as he powered through the Wilmslow players, this led to him scoring the second Park try. The team worked hard with Joe tackling and rucking hard. Archie was moving the ball well along the line allowing Max, Scarlett, Harry P and Will L to run with the ball. Wilmslow scored another try to equalise 2-2, which was the final score. This result was a fair reflection of the game with some excellent rugby played by both teams.
Harry P-1, Tom N-1
Game 2: After a strong team talk and a further boost of inspiration by the coaches the team were motivated for the second game of the day against the same Wilmslow team. The game started with the same exhilarating speed and aggression as the first game with the same passion on both sides. Archie again was working the ball well passing the ball down the line. On one occasion Max grabbed hold of the ball deep in the Parks half to then do a belting run as he snaked across the pitch to almost score an unbelievable try. The first try came from Alvaro as he barged his way through the Wilmslow players who grabbed onto him, finally doing a twist and then place the ball over the try line. The second try came from a Yacko pass to Jack Mann who ran and then did a timely pass to Harry P to score his second try of the day. At this stage the opposition started to get frustrated as the Park team were starting to dominate and take control of the game. The third Park try came from a quick thinking Jack Mann who returned the compliment by intercepting the ball from a Wilmslow pass to then tease the Wilmslow’s players as he raced up the field to score a try. The final try came from a great pass from Joe to Will L to score the fourth and final try of the morning.
Game 2 – 4-0 Win, Alvaro-1, Harry P-1, Jack M- 1, Will L- 1
The second game was a fantastic effort by the whole team and was nearly faultless. The lessons of the Marlow trip are starting to play out with the Park learning from this experience by passing and running onto the ball. Coach Phil summed the game up with the word ‘Ferocity’. There were other adjectives that described the mornings play such as ‘Determination’ and also ‘Team Work” and this was reflected by all the team being awarded Players of the Match.
Bring on the Cheshire Cup!!
