Both teams settled quickly and seemed well-matched in skill and strength with possession evenly distributed for the first 20 minutes of the game. Unfortunately Winscombe conceded first when an interception from Clifton’s quick & skillful centre-forward resulted in a one on one with keeper Kate Walker - the Clifton striker cleverly lifting the ball over the sliding keeper, into the goal.
Winscombe quickly answered back with forwards Sarah Holland, Tia Craig and Hannah Coogan consistently putting Clifton’s defence under pressure and a cross into the D found Coogan, who slapped the ball into the back of the goal levelling the score.
Winscombe upped their intensity with strong work throughout the midfield by Kelly Clark, Imogen Marsh and Hannah Preston. This pressure paid off and Winscombe won a series of short corners which they were unlucky not to convert. Clifton scored again with another turnover of possession which scrambled the Winscombe defence and allowed Clifton’s left forward an open goal shot on the left post taking them into the second half 2-1 up.
Winscombe continued to battle hard throughout the second half with good transfer throughout the defence of Chloe Brown, Leanne Gardner and Charlie Phillips who recycled the ball tirelessly. Mish Isgar and Holly Tyson skilfully picked the ball, dispossessing Clifton and worked the ball up to the forwards. Despite all Winscombe’s hard work this was not destined to be their day and the game ended with no further score.
Joint players of the match was Tia Craig and Sarah Holland.
