The defensive line of Sarah Johnson, Steph Osmant and Keeper Elainna Teare were well-organised by centre back Kat Dee. With the only real strike on goal in the first half kicked clear by Teare.
Lodway play a very different style of hockey to Winscombe and they hit the ball with a ferocity that bordered on dangerous with high sticks and lifted balls. Winscombe refused to be bullied by this style and just let their hockey skills shine through.
The first goal came through great link play down the left hand side of the pitch with midfielders Maddy Bawden and Anya Lawrence working well to get the ball to centre forward Helen Sinclair who slipped the ball to Flo Wring to score.
In the second half, it was Winscombe who rocked Lodway by scoring right from the centre pass. Sinclair passed to Gail Izzard, who released Isabel Morgan on the right wing; Morgan cut inside past 3 players to pass to Wring ... GOAL!
Goal three came from sheer determination after the attack built from Osmant intercepting one of many Lodway long balls to set Lawrence, Ella Hutchinson, Sinclair and Izzard off in a pressured attack. Linking well with Morgan on the wing, who drove the ball to the back line, before crossing for Wring to slot home for her hat trick. Wring scored her and Winscombe’s fourth goal not long after.
The final stages of the match saw a determined Lodway pressing hard but Teare, Johnson, Dee and Osmant allowed very few opportunities apart from a penalty corner awarded with five minutes to go which was struck cleanly and accurately into the goal, leaving the Winscombe keeper no chance.
All of the 3XI wish to record their thanks to 1XI Vice Captain Kelly Clark who gave up her time to be the travelling coach this weekend along with junior club member Verity Clark.
