Wirral v Aston
1st teams Saturday 11 May
Wirral win toss and bowled on a sunny day
Cureton picked up a wicket in the first over but he and Sanj struggled with their line and length against a right and left hand partnership.
The Draper brothers batted well together putting on about 40 runs looking very solid.
Dave changed the bowling around switching Cureton and Sanj for Slighty and Danny Dev. Both bowlers struck quickly and Dave's switch worked. Wickets fell quickly and the bowling was tight, with the wicket helping as it was a tad "up and down". Both Slighty and Danny began to tire but Aston had lost 6 quick wickets, Dave changed bowlers again giving ageing spinner and gym lover Ron Gambles a go and letting Cureton have another go. After brief resistance from Aston last man Wirral got their man and Aston were 73 all out, not a great score but a tricky chase was on the cards on an unpredictable wicket. Wirral bowled well, especially Slighty and Danny and took most catches, a solid first half.
Tea was had and we started with Wedgey and Slighty, however Wedgey went first ball and moped off to read about his inner chimp.
Wickets fell quickly with Slighty, skipper Dave and Muisey all going cheaply with Aston bowling tightly and using the track well.
Domi and Sanj cane together and got stuck in, they were patient and hit the bad ball and they got some runs on the board. Domi went for a well made 23, Danny lasted a couple of balls before a grubber that didn't get over ankle height from short of a lengthy gave him no chance. At 38 for 6 Aston had a big chance but Sanj was looking solid and Ray started well and both got stuck in putting on 33 much needed runs. Sanj was first to go being bowled then Ray lbw, the Aston change bowlers were doing a great job getting a further wicket and with 9 down Rolin and Gambles seen us home in a thrilling, well contested game of cricket.
Plus points - ace new dressing rooms, good positive skippering and changes from Dave, great bowling from Slighty and Danny and good fielding/catching.
