Witham started their season in Merit table 4 with an entertaining trip to Campion. Witham started impressively, scoring in the first couple of minutes. Steve Clements took the ball from a maul and forced his way over. Michael Vidler slotted the conversion for a 0-7 lead. Campion then had a spell of possession and managed to level the scores with a converted try. But Witham knew they had good pace in the backs and retook the lead when Vidler was on the end of a swift attack. Once again, Campion managed to level the scores. Aaron Stanier then scored as Witham took control. Another from Jack Churchyard, extended the lead. With Vidler converting, the score moved to 14-28. Witham were possibly thinking about half time when they lost concentration and allowed the hosts through. With the last play of the half, Campion yet again drew level with a converted try, send them teams in at 28-28.
The second half was a lot more cagey. The hosts restricted the space for the Witham backs, nullifying the best attacking options. So when awarded a late penalty, Vidler took the 3 points to give Witham the lead. Campion threw everything at the visitors but could not get through until a minute from the end. That converted try gave the hosts a 35-31 win and gave Witham a few things to correct for next week's home game.
