In heavy conditions, the game was evenly matched and maybe that contributed to some unsavoury moments. Early on, the Burnham backs showed their pace as they drifted left. With just John Cox to beat, their winger went to step inside. But Coxy not only halted him, but stole the ball and kicked it clear. A few minutes later, the same attack got through to open the scoring for the visitors. Witham went on the attack from the restart. Although Burnham had possession, they could not clear their 22. When they tried to kick, it was charged down. Jake Westwood chased and as the last man waited for it to go dead, Jake slid in and grounded the ball. Burnham managed to retake the lead through a breakaway try but Witham were a constant threat. When the Burnham full back decided to have a hissy fit (I think Rob Bennett had tackled him impolitely), their forwards thought it was a good idea to wade in. Once all the toys had been returned to prams, some more rugby broke out. Mike Harrison had come on after 20 mins and made an immediate impact. His 2 tries gave Witham a 19-12 lead at the break.
The break did not seem to cheer the visitors up at all. They seemed a bit happier when they scored. Cant describe the try as i was having their studs removed from my calf at the time. But i didd see Sam Holloway make a customary charge through their defence to score. Late on, Sam scored again to give Witham a 31-26 lead. With time running out, Burnham broke away and in spite of Vidlers attempts the scored to level. The conversion gave them the lead and a penalty with the last play secured their victory.
Man of the match was Rob Bennett with some great tackles and incisive runs.
