Great final game

Having beaten us in the first game of the season, Benfleet may have expected an easy win in the last game of the season. But they had to work hard for this win. The first scrum showed that the Witham pack would be competitive, taking possession from the Benfleet put in, but the visitors held out the subsequent attack. A lineout led to the opening try as Benfleet took the ball before releasing their backs to get through. From the restart, Witham attacked and earned a scrum from which Alex Beer attacked the line. When he was tackled, the defender was penalised and John Cox took the penalty quickly. His drive got close and with the ball made available, Max Ball was able to find Connor Friend who dived over to score. This seemed to annoy the visitors and they scored 3 quick and decisive tries to extend a strong lead. As the half came to a close, the home side wanted more points on the board and were camped in the Benfleet half until Max Basham managed to bundle over. The conversion by Cox gave a score of 12- 22.
With nothing to lose, Witham went on the attack fro. The start of the second half and runs by Richard Ward and Liam Ridgewell came close without quite making it. When Benfleet got possession, they managed a breakaway try and followed it up with another soon afterwards. Witham never give up and when Kev Davis chipped over, Sam Holloway made sure he was the first to get there and score.
The final score of 17-49 sounds more definitive than it was. Witham 2nds can be proud of a 5th placed finish in a difficult division.
