Exciting news for the upcoming season…

Withycombe RFC are pleased to announce a new senior mens coaching and management team for the upcoming season. With a blend of new and old faces we have assembled a team of experienced players and coaches who have played at a senior level.

Taking on the role of Head Player-Coach will be Adam Clayton. Adam is a product of Millfield School and has played rugby for Bath, Exeter Chiefs, Birmingham & Solihull Bees, Cornish Pirates, and others. Adam is keen to create the right culture amongst the players and hopes to see a return to winning ways but not at the expense of the fun factor.

Also (re)joining us for the season is Nick Southern. Nick last played for Withycombe in 2003 following a successful career with Exeter Chiefs. Nick has got experience from the coaching side too having coached at Exmouth and Newton Abbott. Nick will be taking on the role of Assistant Coach but with a particular responsibility for recruiting new players. Nick can be contacted on 07939 356910 or email

Richard Blyth is no stranger to the Club. Former Club Captain, former Chairman and Assistant Coach to the senior men for the past few seasons, Richard has agreed to continue coaching the side, but also takes on the role of 1st XV Team Manager.

We are very excited that we have three quality individuals who have a love for the game and the club in equal measure. Between the three of them, they will continue to build on the hard work of Sam Williams, who departs from his role as Head Coach after six years. During his tenure, Sam has seen the Withies earn promotion from Devon 1, in an unbeaten 2019/20 season and lifting the Devon Junior Cup at the end of the 2022/23 Season. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Sam for all of his hard work and dedication and wish him well as he pursues new opportunities.

We look forward to welcoming new and old players to join our 2024/25 campaign in Counties 2 Devon, which happens to be Withycombe’s centenary year. If you don’t play; come and enjoy a warm welcome at a truly grassroots, community rugby club.
