So near and yet so far

Withycombe's ladies side came up short against a talented Topsham outfit but will probably feel they should have got more from the game.

Topsham spent almost the entire first half pinned in their own territory but Withycombe couldn't turn their pressure into points, with the half time whistle coming with the score at 0-0. Notable performances from Carol Glover, Emma Chandler, and Alice Thompson in the forwards unfortunately weren't enough to get the breakthrough, and although Amy Gillard's return in her new position of inside centre provided some much needed go-forward, the backs lacked a cutting edge.

Topsham's back line got their act together in the second half and after going close in the first period, confirmed their ascendancy with three well-taken tries. Withycombe battled hard but Topsham's superior fitness ensured that the Green & Black never really looked like scoring.

Next week the ladies travel to Chard whose womens' side are celebrating their one-year anniversary.
