Beginning the weekend with concerns about heavy rain and strong winds, there were doubts as to whether the fixture would go ahead. Fortunately, match day delivered dry skies and calm conditions—ideal for Withycombe Ladies to defend their position at the top of the table on home soil.
Squad selection reached full capacity with 22 players, ranging from experienced regulars to those new to the game. The team also celebrated the long-awaited return of Charlotte Leckie after her recovery from a neck injury.
Withies came out firing from the first whistle. Captain Georgia Skelly set the tone early with a brilliant break straight from kick-off, charging all the way to the 5m line with Brixham defenders clinging on, before offloading to Ebony Mardle to score under the posts. Moments later, Emma Forrester added another with a trademark barnstorming run, powering over the try line. Hannah Bolwell followed with excellent awareness to touch down for the team’s third.
The home side continued to dominate possession and territory. Forrester broke the line once again before sending a perfectly timed pass to support runner Alice Cooper, who showed blistering pace to finish under the posts from just inside Brixham’s half. To close out a commanding first period, Skelly ran a superb line off a set play, slicing through the defence to touch down. By halftime, Withycombe held a confident 33–0 lead.
Brixham came out with renewed determination after the break, keeping Withies pinned deep in their half for periods of play. However, the defensive unit stood firm, securing turnovers through strong jackaling and maintaining superiority at both the lineout and scrum. Fresh legs made an impact as substitutions were introduced, including a debut appearance for Jess Ellis, who joined the squad earlier in the week.
In the second half, Alice Cooper trialled at fly half, calmly calling the shots and guiding the attacking shape with confidence.
Withycombe’s consistency and work rate never wavered, and the team finished the match with a total of seven tries and six conversions—securing a commanding 47–0 victory at home and firmly holding their place at the top of the league.
