A humdinger of a match last weekend saw Withycombe Ladies start 2020 with a winning feeling. An early score from Totnes rallied the Withies and they soon took the lead through tries from forward Carol Glover (with her first ever try) and the electric pace of KC Williams. Despite this the ‘green and blacks’ found themselves 24-12 down at half time as Totnes ran in three unanswered tries.
Doug Wibberley’s ‘hairdryer’ seemed to work wonders in the interval and Withies returned with a renewed energy. A try from Phoebe Pretty-McGrath and then a brace from Georgia Skelly put Withies back in the lead with only 15 minutes to play. The tension was palpable, and when Totnes retook the lead with less than 10minutes remaining it looked like it would be a frustrating defeat. However, there is a growing confidence in a developing squad and with this came a final heroic effort. A concerted team effort was finished by Kel Fox who showed determination to power over and change the lead for the sixth and final time. The last 5minutes saw Totnes encamped on the Withy try-line, but their efforts were repelled (much to the travelling supporters’ relief!). A huge well done to the whole team, but special thanks to Lynn Pridham on her debut for Withycombe.
