After their preseason win in a friendly against Crediton, Withys first competitive match of the season was played away to Exmouth.
An early try for Withys got the game off to a good start but some strong Exmouth attacking kept Withycombe pushed back within their own half for from the restart. The strength and teamwork in the Withycombe defence contained the Exmouth breaks despite numerous drives in to the Withy 22.
The effectiveness of the Withycombe pre season training was evident with some slick passing and kicking which maintained pressure on the home side. A well timed quick chip over the heads of the defensive Exmouth line saw Aaron Lee break through to steal the ball and touch down for a try, further demonstrating the understanding between the team players.
The first half ended with the visitors 17- 0 ahead, but the points all had had to be fought for.
Shortly after the kick-off in the second half, three quick trys asserted Withycombe's grip on the game and they continued to maintain the upper hand to end the day 44-0 to Withycombe.
Exmouth's new colts side played well in their first competitive match in the mixed age group, but despite demonstrating some fine rugby, the younger Withycombe colts won the day with their team largely unchanged from last year. Despite the long summer break, Withycombe have been able to maintain the teamwork, skills and cohesion that proved so successful last season resulting in opportunities that saw 8 players scoring for Withycombe this week.
With tries from Harry Neath-Rogers, Jason Farrant, Oscar Moyle, Vinnie Neath-Rogers, Ben Dawson, Aaron Lee, Ben Bolwell, Josh Arbury, 2 Cons by Jason Farrant.
