Sallianne Cornish reports on Saturday’s Colts game against Paignton

Withies started well from the kick off and were awarded an early scrum. This meant that quick ball out to centre Tom Croal who crossed the line. Will Cooper kicks the conversion to give the home side an early 7-0 lead. Withies kept up the high standard of play by recycling the ball well and putting Paignton under all sorts of pressure and it is only a incomplete last pass which is stopped the boys from scoring another. The hands eventually come together and Tom Croal gets his second try. Conversion is good by Will Cooper. Following the second try, Paignton do manage to get their hands on the ball and put a few phases together but Withy defence hold them off close to the line. An injury to one of the Paignton front rows brought up a problem for the visitors who were only able to travel with a bare 15 players, meaning that they looked to Withycombe for support, with Liam Daniels changing his colours to don a cherry and white shirt for the remainder of the match. Paignton work hard with the ball and are camped in the Withy 22. Paignton take a good line out and and Withycombe’s Liam Daniels crosses the line for Paignton . The conversion is good. Paignton lose another forward and Withy lend them another player. This brought the end to the first half with the boys in green and black 14 points to 7 in the lead.

The second half began with a strong Withy attack and good hands lets captain Archie Symons score under the posts. Conversion is good. As the referee’s watch hit 40 minutes, Paignton suffer another injury which brings a halt to play. Due to the seriousness of the injury the decision was made to abandon the game. With the result pending the Withycombe side looked like the winning team but that will be decided by the Devon RFU.

Withycombe players and coaches wish a speedy recovery to the Paignton player.
