Match Preview

This weekend we make the journey down the A38 to Plymouth to play Plymouth Argaum in round 3 of the 2023/24 Counties 2 Devon league.

Last weekend, Withy kept their winning start to the league going with a 19-10 win against fellow Plymothian side OPMs. Tries from Joe Blyth, Will Cooper and Max Rickards alongside a brace of conversions from Tom Cooke earned the points at a sunny Raleigh Park. The result means that Withy currently sit in fourth place in the early league standings.

Sitting just two places below us in sixth are our hosts for this weekend, Plymouth Argaum who suffered defeat in a high-scoring game away against South Molton. Three tries in the final quarter from the Chiefs closed the 30-point gap to eventually bring the final score to 40-31.

Like last week’s opponents, this will be our tenth meeting with Argaum; with Withycombe winning 5 of the previous 9 encounters, the stats remain fairly close. Our last match was back in the 2019/20 season in the Devon 1 league. With the pandemic curtailing the season, we only met once, with Withycombe coming away 68-0 winners at Raleigh Park.

As we said last weekend though, this was a fair while ago with both sides having three and a half years to change, adapt and strengthen their squads. We encountered a tough challenge last weekend in similar circumstances and can definitely expect more of the same this weekend at Bickleigh Down, especially with the home side enjoying a positive record against us at their place. The Withy boys will need to be on their game to come away with the points and keep the winning streak going…
