This Saturday marks the half way period of the 2019/20 season and the final round of “first leg” matches ahead of the return fixtures in the new year. In this closing fixture of 2019, Withycombe travel down to Plymouth to play Old Plymothian & Mannamedian, or OPM as they are more commonly known!
Last week, the Withy boys ran in nine tries in a fine 53-14 victory over a tenacious Totnes side who continued to play a good competitive game for the entire 80min. This win marked our tenth league win in a row, remaining unbeaten thus far in the campaign. This statistic will want to be improved on as the boys make their way down the Devon Expressway at the weekend, but as ever it won’t be easy and they will have tough opposition waiting for them.
OPM currently sit fourth in the table with 36 points, winning 7 out of a possible 10 games. Their only two losses are against both Sarries sides, who currently sit 2nd & 3rd. Last weekend, our hosts travelled to Kingsteignton and came away with a convincing 31-19 win away at New Cross.
It’s been almost five years since we last played OPM, January 2015 to be exact when both sides were in the Cornwall/Devon league. During this season, the Withies chalked up 66-20 and 51-10 victories. Impressive numbers, but that was five seasons ago, and a lot can change - we will need to be on top form recreate this once again...
Tomorrow's game kicks off at 2:30pm at the King George V Playing Fields in Elburton, Plymouth (PL9 8HR). We hope to see as many of you there to be that "16th Man" and support the boys, so bring your supportive voices to cheer on the boys in Green and Black.
