Topsham under 11`s have beaten nearly all teams before them this season, but Withycombe under 11`s are a team full of confidence after superb results recently, and it was the latter who triumphed last Sunday with a combined score of 45-20.
Match one saw Withies win the toss and playing down the slope, knowing that a good start was crucial, and Ollie Willis opened the scoring early on with a typical robust forwards try. The play from both teams was entertaining to watch, with play switching from end to end. After soaking up early pressure, Withies started to put Topsham under the cosh, forcing mistakes from their hosts. Crunching tackles from Alfie Gillard and Jack Wood were constantly putting the young Tops on the back foot. A quickly taken penalty saw Charlie Passmore catch Topsham napping, and his pace has no answer and Withies opened up a 10-0 lead. Topsham used their big forwards well, and reduced the deficit just before half time as one such break and offload saw a try just inside the touchline. The second half started at a frenetic pace and Tops drew level after bursting through the Withies defence. Passmore scored his second after the forwards set up another platform to launch an attack, but Topsham had the last say by scoring in the last couple of minutes to claim a fair 15-15 result. Man of the match went to young Passmore, not for his try scoring abilities this time, but for not missing a tackle all match.
Nine completely different boys took to the pitch for match two with Withies playing up the slope. Harry Bennett soon had the home team rattled, chasing down any ball which went astray from constant Withies pressure. It was Bennett who scored Withies first two scores, after good play from the backs allowed his pace to do the rest. Sam Skinner, who started at fly half for the first time, was beginning to call the shots and it was only stout defending from Topsham which kept them in the game. They did however, managed to pull one back to give Withies a half time lead of 10-5.
Playing down the slope second half saw withies attack with gusto, and soon Bennett scored after sustained pressure. After camping in Withies half for a while, Withies won the ball at the breakdown and a clever kick and chase from Skinner saw Bennett add his forth try to put Withies in command. A couple of big tackles from Callum Tose and Jacob Holt seem to rattle Topsham, and a confident Withies were now playing super rugby. Man of the Match skinner darted over after a lovely offload from Erin Asselman , and Henry Bragg added the final score to give Withies a famous victory by 30-5.
This was an excellent victory against a good side, with every boy putting in a superb shift. Lets hope it continues next week away at Totnes.
