Great result

Withycombe under 12`s played their best game to date to record two excellent wins over a well drilled and physical Torquay side last Sunday. Withies thought they were probably playing the next age group up due to Torquays size, but the boys in green and black took the game to their hosts. They were quicker to the breakdown on numerous times, hassling the backs and putting the forwards under pressure from the start. Withies welcomed back Harry Bennett and Paddy McGuinness after a few weeks out, and it was young Bennett at centre who stole the show scoring all four tries in a fantastic 20-10 victory in game one. The handling skills from Withies was a joy to watch, considering the atrocious weather, and the first score arrived after about ten phases of play. Ollie Willis and James Griffin were outstanding, constantly winning turnover ball from their bulkier opponents. Max Wilkinson was a constant thorn in Torquays side, and he and Max Richards hardly missed a tackle. Torquay managed two scores of their own, the first coming from a lovely offload.

Match two saw a few changes, and Torquay opened the scoring early on after early pressure. Most teams would fold against this Torquay side, but the way in which Withies replied was to take the game to them. Erin Asselman drew Withies level with his trade mark run, before young Willis almost put them ahead with a surging turn of pace, only held up near the try line. A draw looked on the cards before Charlie Passmore found a little space down the side, and after a clever chip ahead, was able to gather the ball and outstrip two desperate Torquay defenders to touch down and hand Withies victory by 10 points to 5.

This was a game played by two in form sides, but Withies did themselves, their parents and the coaches proud today.
