Fantastic rugby

Withycombe Under 12`s first game of the New Year couldn`t have been any harder as their old nemesis Teignmouth were their opposition at Broadmeadow sports centre last Sunday. These two sides always bring the best out of each other and prove why they are two of the best sides in Devon for their age group, with a superb display of attacking rugby.
Game one saw Withies take the game to Teignmouth, and it was after sustained pressure that allowed Charlie Passmore to scamper over in the corner to put Withies ahead. Both sides were playing sublime rugby, with attacking and counter attacking the order of the day. Teigns drew level when a dropped pass allowed their star player to gather the ball up and cross the whitewash.
Withies were gaining the upper hand with James Griffin and Ollie Willis outstanding, and it was due to their outstanding contribution at the breakdown which allowed another score, this time from the powerful Jack Wood. Another wayward pass allowed Teigns to intercept and gift them a soft try to bring the scores level at half time.
Withies started to lose a little shape in the second half, and their play became a little sloppy, allowing the home side to score two well worked tries and ahead for the first time. With a rare defeat on the cards, the fitness levels began to show when Withies Callum Tose was forced into touch with the try line at his mercy. The resulting attack saw the play switch sides, and after the ball was passed through the backs, Passmore reduced the deficit to go over in the corner. Withies had the last say though, and after a quick penalty, Passmore brought the scores level and the game to a close with a fantastic 20-20 draw

Game two saw Withies totally dominate their tired hosts, and with a few key players missing for Teigns, the scoring was only one way. The half time score of 35-0 finished with a final score of 60-0 with no fewer than nine players scoring for Withycombe. Harry Bennett swaggered over for a hat trick, the hard working Max Wilkinson bagged a brace, and the rest were shared out by , Paddy McGuinness, Jack Draper, Erin Asselman , with Tose, Passmore, Griffin and Willis completing the scoring.

This really was a fantastic display from Withycombe, and apart from a funny five minutes in the second half of the first game, the all round contribution from every player was evident to see.
Next week sees another tough match , this time away at Exeter Youth.
