Long trip well worth while

Withycombe U14s looked to continue their Cup exploits as they made the long journey to a rain sodden and breezy Bideford. After long consultations the game was finally given the green light by the referee and the quarter final was on.

The opening exchanges were deep in the Bideford twenty two where early pressure was forcing the Bideford boys into making uncharacteristic mistakes, these were eagerly pounced upon by the young Withies. And after a series of phases moving the ball ever closer to the Bideford line the Withy forwards crashed over for the opening converted score. Going behind was a shock to the home side, who then proceeded to move the ball up the field and put the Withycombe boys under pressure. For the first time they looked a little unsure, as after a sustained five minute period Bideford were able to move the ball wide and score in the corner, unconverted. From here on in the Withy boys started to calm down and take control of the game.
Firstly through another fine set of plays from the forwards who were again able to score under the posts, and from the backs, as the ball was now starting to be moved across the pitch with much more confidence. It was this use of the hands that was causing Bideford big problems, and if not for two superb try saving tackles, the score would have been bigger than the 14-5 with which Withy turned around.

With the teams turned around Withycombe now had the wind at their backs and with a very heavy pitch fitness would be key in the latter stages. The Withy boys were asked for more control at the breakdown and they duly delivered. Any jitters were long gone and an air of reassurance fell on the Withies play. Good use of the kicking option was turning Bideford backwards whenever they may have been danger. And once Withycombe had the ball in good territory they were not going to leave without putting points on the board.

Twice in the space of two minutes the Withy boys exploited gaps in the home defence to burst through and score well worked tries. One converted. This effectively put the game to bed, as Bideford were urged to play for pride.

However these Withycombe boys do not let up, and in the dying moments the forwards wanted one last hurrah. All eight were on hand to drive one of their number over the line for the games final try, converted.

This had been a good physical test for the Withy youngsters against a physical Bideford side. However desire, belief, agility and plenty of skill had seen the boys in Green and Black home to an impressive 5-33 Win.

Next up the in the Devon Cup is the Semi Final on February 9th at Home against Tiverton.
