Playing returns to Withycombe

With the sun out in Devon last weekend it fell on the U15s from Withycombe to be first side to take to competitive action since returning from lockdown. And they would not disappoint.

Ivybridge RFC, who are a well drilled, very skilful and powerful side, were the guests who had made the trip up from South Devon to provide the opposition for what promised to be a great advert for the touch game. And so it proved. All well marshalled by an independent referee.

From the outset the skills on show from both sides, be it in attack or defence, were outstanding with some superb running lines, passes and support play. The young Withies gained the upper hand over the first two quarters making the most of the limited space being left by well marshalled defences.

Halfway through the third quarter Ivybridge got themselves on the score sheet, and from this point on it became a game of stout Withycombe defending against wave after wave of Ivybridge attacking. This and the Ivybridge advantage of having six substitutes, thus fresh legs, began to take its toll on a energy sapping day.

These young Withies are made of stern stuff and constant defensive pressure did lead to some attacking mistakes, however Ivybridge kept coming and scored twice more with an excellent move and a charged down kick leading to scores.

The Withy boys stood strong however and were deserving of the score at the final whistle. Withycombe 28 Ivybridge 19.
