Tough test against Torquay

On a day more springlike than autumnal Withycombe U9s played host to Torquay, one of the best sides in a Devon at this age group, for three thrilling games of rugby.

And all players could be rightly proud of their efforts. With the young Withies evenly split into two sides it was decided to change the whole team at half time in each game. Despite the warm weather the hands seemed to be cold and hard as passes went astray or were dropped handing possession to the ever eager and well drilled Torquay boys. Withycombe however are a team that does not quit and will keep trying to the very end. The result was some very well worked tries, and it was especially pleasing to see the scrum half position used to good effect at the break down on several occasions.

Improvements were being made all over the field and each player continues to improve. Alas on this day it was not quite to be as Torquay always seemed to have the upper hand, although tellingly for the first time the young Withies were on a par physically against a larger side. Surely a good sign. It must only be a matter of time before this side really hits their stride and are able to record the success they crave and deserve.

Lastly a thank you to all from Torquay for a superb mornings rugby with smashing players and coaches with a great attitude. Looking forward to the return in February.
