Sunday's fixture was the Withies take on Exeter Saracens at home.
A strong turn out by both teams on a lovely autumn day at Raleigh Park resulted in two fantastic games of rugby played in the perfect spirit. Two very close games were played with both teams scoring a number of excellent tries and naturally (given this is a Withycombe match report!) Withycombe scored two tries more than Exeter in the first game and maybe nicked the second as well :-)
After moving minutes silence held for one of the Saracens parents, the game kicked off and immediately resulted in some excellent rugby by both teams.
Withycome scored a number of unanswered tries with some excellent phases of rugby, the team putting into practice what they had learnt during coaching. Really fantastic to see. However the Saracens gradually worked their way back into the game and scored some lovely tries of their own.
In particular there was some incredible tackling from Harry Walker and Rory despite some strong running by the Saracens, The Withies were able to defend their line more often than not. Ryan also made some fantastic runs and Ollie also provided some neat work in the midfield and some offloads.
The second game was a little tighter as Saracens started to work the angles - Withycombe having to form a more defensive set up. However as the game went on, Jack and Charlie really came into the game with something fantastic running and offloads. Well done Jack for going and getting stuck in!!! Luke also came more into the game as it went on making some excellent runs. Notably, Evan - who was biding his time suddenly lept into action and latterly made some outstanding try saving tackles!!
Harry Griffin and Ruben made some excellent contributions during the second game - Harry stepping up and controlling the defensive line and Ruben making some excellent running in support with his persistance resulting in an excellent try. Another player to mention was Tom - he really got stuck in the made some excellent tackles. Grit and determination were clear to see.
In the end, with the Withies just about edging the contest, Exeter Saracens proved admirable opponents with the game played in a fantastic spirit. Thanks to all the Saracens coaches and great support on the touchline, not least guest appearances from Charlie and Will to spur the Withies on!!
MAN OF THE MATCH went to Rory for his outstanding defensive work and tackling.
PLAY OF THE MATCH was awarded to both Jason and Harry Walker for a beautiful pop pass that lead to an excellent try!!
Well done everyone and see you next week. Please note we are in the kitchen again in a few weeks - don't be backward in coming forward to volunteer your services!!!
