As one of the furthest fixtures in terms of travel, Brixham feels like a proper away fixture - doesn't it??
A crisp, clear winters morning met the travelling Withies who were out in force for this fixture. A fantastic turnout of 14 enabled us to run two games in parallel, thus giving everyone maximum game time. Let's see if we can continue this as we go forward!
Both teams played two 20 minute games and the extra game time really showed for both teams. A really fantastic effort all round.
Team 1, ably skippered by Harry W, displayed some great skills with great offloading and running in attack, and excellent tackling in defence. This team really seemed to gel and ran out convincing winners in both of their games. Some notable performances came from Luke in particular - Luke is working very hard at getting stuck in, great job Luke. Callum is starting to become a lethal weapon in attack and Harry W is proving to be our greatest asset in defence.
Team 2, skippered by Charlie and Evan, had a slightly tougher day at the office. Despite everyone putting in maximum effort there wasn't quite the same cohesion as in previous weeks and despite best efforts in the first game - it resulted in defeat. The second game was a vast improvement - notably Will with some great running and driving, Harry G for being up quickly and defence (and a couple of great runs) and Evan with his tackling. Reuben displayed some real skill and agility, and Ollie made some great runs and was unlucky not to score. A much better effort in the second game - well done guys.
There were two man of the match awards - one for each team. And these two players really do deserve it.
Team 1: Rory CS - absolutely fantastic in defence with his excellent tackling. Clearly all the practice it's paying off! Well done Rory
Team 2: Charlie - The standout player for team 2, Charlie scored most of the tries and did a great job as captain. Fantastic stuff!
Suffice to say it was an interesting fixture and clearly shows how we have progressed. It also highlights we need to improve our tackling and offloading. Feel free to practice in the garden!!
As ever a massive thank you to the parents for schlepping down to Brixham. Let's aim for an even bigger turnout next Sunday versus Exmouth. Please be prompt as we will be getting the tackle bags out to get the boys properly warmed up. Charlie Rogers will also be coming down for his first session back. Please let Scotty know if you are not available ASAP.
