Withies march on against the Cockles

A sticky but playable Raleigh Park greeted the home leg of the Withycome versus Exmouth 2015/16 season.

Billed as "the local derby" there was a collective holding of breath with the expectant crowds eager to see the contest get underway.

Another strong turnout for Withycombe saw 15 take the field including the return of Charlie R. With the shirt presentation complete, Charlie was able to get involved with the tackle bags - great to have you back Charlie!

Exmouth also arrived in force with around 35 players all keen to get one over their local rivals and schoolmates! It really is incredible how big their junior section is - A credit to their coaching staff.

With the Withies putting out two strong sides Emouth rotated every half to ensure everybody got a game. And what a pair of games we saw. The Exmouth speed merchants took early advantage of some gaps in the Withycombe defence racing to an early lead in game 1, however the defensive drills from the warmup started to bear fruit as Withycombe tightened up to stem the flow. A much more even second half saw some brilliant running from Luke who had an inspired day. Rory was terrific in attack and defence with line breaks and tackle counts high. Sam was weaving in and out to great affect and Harry G again showed some brilliant improvements with several line breaks.

On the other pitch things were going equally as well, with Callum, Harry w and Will all putting in sterling displays to take a much deserved lead in the match. Ruben zigzagged and twirled his way through the defence and Evan once again found his running legs. Two excellent performances to start the day.

With Exmouth rotating their teams every half Withycome faced fresh legs every 10 minutes however this did not appear to affect their play - both teams seemed to find a groove, and both teams got better as they went further into each game.

Game 2 saw this improvement continue with both Withy teams taking the upper hand - again their defensive work in the warm up paying dividends.

Team 1 ran in a number of tries with Rory again consistently breaking the line, and Ollie R taking charge at the breakdown, working hard to get the ball wide, and running in four tries of his own. Ryan HC also scored a couple of excellent tries having really started to find his legs!

In a similar vein Team 2 looked to be scoring tries for fun. Step up Tom to put his mark on the game with some excellent runs to set up good field position that allowed the likes of Jason to convert - Jason scoring a brace to secure the game. Unfortunately towards the end we sustained to injuries - Harry W with an ankle injury and Evan with a bump to the head. Hopefully you'll both be up and running in no time!!

Man of the match
With so many excellent performances it was difficult to nominate just two players. Team 1 shortlist include Rory, Luke, Ollie and Sam. Team 2 shortlist include Harry Ruben at Callum. Well done guys, a great performance by everyone.

A really excellent fixture. Much enjoyed by the kids and the coaches. A big thank you to Exmouth for making this one of the most competitive yet fun fixtures of the season. We very much look forward to the return fixture.
