Thame United 3 Witney Town 2

After Saturday's fine win away at Newbury and a large spate of away league matches with yet more to come Witney Town ran out of steam tonight against Thame at the ASM Stadium.

In front of a healthy and vocal away following on a gorgeous looking pitch the Blanketmen made the perfect start with Mark Janes snapshot finding the bottom left corner after a 1-2 between Nick Thorne and Conor McDonagh was intercepted. Thame had a free kick saved on 5 minutes by Alan Foster. Witney began to dominate though and after a double slip in the box Jermaine Ferreira wasted a good opportunity to double the score and then came close to bundling the ball in a minute later but it was cleared. However Witney were not to be denied on 25 minutes when a corner was cleared to Nick Thorne who swung a cross over which was headed home close in by Conor McDonagh for his 17th of a productive season and minutes later he was denied close in again by a fine save from former Witney keeper Lee Farrow when connecting on the volley. Foster made another good save from yet another Thame free kick on 36 minutes before the last chance was slashed wide by Ferreira before half time.

The 2nd half started well for Witney with good possession and Ferreira having another good effort just wide before the game turned on a refereeing decision in favour of the hosts. An indirect free kick was awarded for an obstruction and Dan West fired home (apparently with the aid of a slight deflection?? otherwise the goal would not have stood). Unlucky for sure. This fired up the hosts and a long range effort was just kept the right side of the line by Foster on 58. Adam Morris' deflected shot almost went over the line but was adjudged by the linesman not to have crossed and from the break Foster yet again had to get down well to save. But on 65 minutes Foster's defence was breached again when a long cross was headed back and bundled over the line by Hodgkins as Witney switched off. Witney tried to come again - Nick Thorne's effort was well saved but it was yet another free kick on the edge of the box for Thame - again taken by West which seemed to deflect in once more that sealed the win for United. Alan Foster who had been busy all the 2nd half even had time for another 1 on 1 save after Witney threw everyone forward late on.

A frustrating night from the highs of the first half to the lows of the second but luck certainly seemed to favour the hosts in the end.
