Umpires are as important to the game as players and coaches. There are opportunities for everyone to umpire from U10 7-a-side matches to the top Adult matches and everything in between. We encourage Junior players, parents and adult members to have a go.
Adult teams are expected to provide at least one umpire from their team on Saturdays if playing Home matches.
Many of our younger junior games are a great place to start with no qualifications needed.
For those who enjoy umpiring there is help to progress through to umpiring at County and Regional level right up to international Level.
Junior umpires find that the experience improves their strategic understanding of the game and many umpire to fulfill Duke of Edinburgh Award Skills requirements.
Getting started
To find out more about umpiring please email Jeremy at umpiredev@wokinghc.com. Jeremy runs ad hoc umpire training sessions and is happy to mentor any juniors keen to get involved. Many start umpiring with a 'buddy' until they become confident to go solo.
To umpire Tier 2 Junior matches and lower adult team matches you must complete England Hockey Level 1 training. This is a two hour online interactive session. This can be accessed with the below link, this link will also take you to more guidance on becoming an Umpire.

For Tier 1 Junior teams and more senior Adult teams you must be Level 1 Assessed qualified. Jeremy is our in-house assessor and once you have completed the Level 1 training Jeremy can arranged for you to be assessed.
Developing and umpiring culture
We expect all umpires at the Club to be treated with respect. We would encourage all teams at all levels to engage with their umpires after the games and to discuss in a friendly manner incidents that have occurred during the game, this is a great way for both players and umpires to develop their understanding and interpretation of the rules of the game.
