Weekly training from Wednesday 6 April for 5 weeks

The Ladies are organising an Umpire Training Session to be run weekly over a period of 5 weeks starting on Wednesday 6th April until Wednesday 4th May.

Woking have been very fortunate and privileged to have produced an array of top-quality umpires over the years.

Past umpires include Val Sassall & Frances Block who went on to be FIH umpires taking charge of many Internationals both Outdoors & Indoors around the world.

Carla Thurston & Annie Proud both became long standing National League Umpires.
Our current National League Umpires are Chris Burton-Brown & Simon Carr who at 23 is one of the youngest on the circuit.

Our bionic knee replacement man, aka Ian Hay, is a retired National League Umpire having umpired in excess of 200 national league, cup and international games. He is now part of the South East Area officiating group both as an umpire and an umpire assessor/coach.
Paul Chapman-Hatchett & Gihan Thabrew have the challenging and demanding task of keeping the men in check on the South East Circuit.

The purpose of the sessions is to run through the Rules and their common mis- interpretations (it’s surprising how many of us think we know them but actually don’t). This will include the new rules that will be operating from next season, provide tips on umpiring and have a Q & A session.

There will also be practical sessions to be held on Saturday 7th ,14th & 21st May where coaching will take place during the Club 7 a side games.

The sessions will be fun but informative with plenty of scenarios to be played out and then open discussion.

We are not necessarily looking for the next National League Umpire (although I’m sure our current ones didn’t expect to reach the standard they’ve achieved when they first started) but we are hoping the sessions will provide individuals with the confidence to at least umpire the juniors so that the umpiring load can be shared around rather than concentrated on just 1 or 2 people.

However, if anyone does get the umpiring bug and has an aptitude for it, we have the experience, knowledge and pedigree within our stable of umpires to be able to support and coach them so that they can fulfil their potential.
