Woking Ladies 1s vs Surbiton 3’s
Score : Surbiton 5 / Woking 0
Venue : Woking Hockey Club, Wishbone Way, Goldsworth Park

After a motivational team talk and up-beat warm up Woking went onto the pitch today prepared for a good game. The team started better than in previous weeks and within the first 10 minutes sentiments were that the game could and should go in Woking’s favour. Woking were defending well as well as making some great attacking runs. They created several short corners but couldn’t capitalise. Woking were looking positive and focused. The only goal in the first half came after 26 minutes, against the run of play, and was scored by Surbiton’s Olivia Moore.

Surbiton were a slick team with some neat skills and lovely disguised passes which got the better of the Woking press every time. Surbiton came back strongly in the 2nd half with Abi Krone scoring in the first 2 minutes to put Woking on the back foot. Some loose passes were capitalised on by a motivated Surbiton team who attacked hard and scored in the 47th, 53rd and 66th minute through Tasmin Williams, Sian Craze and Carole Date-Chung, respectively.

Woking are a new team and despite the score line there are positives which must not be overlooked in a team which is still forming.

In the 2nd half Grace O’Brian showed that tenacity and determination are strong motivators, and had an amazing run cutting through two Surbiton players before the whistle stopped her – the umpire did not anticipate she would win the ball in the 3rd tackle and, rather than playing on, she was unfortunately called back by the late whistle (in her favour). Grace O’Brian, together with Mia Smith, Abbi Howgate and Lizzie van der Hoeven are young up and coming juniors who have not played at this level before but are standing their ground and showing that they are keen and eager and improving in each game.

Lauren White proved how effective commitment and practice can be. She found her form in this game and attacked numerous times, at speed, down the right hand side of the pitch cutting in on the baseline and making some superb text book passes onto the P spot…..or winning a short. A well-deserved winner of the man of the match vote today from her team.

Woking’s Midfield and defense did well with some great long, quick passes down the side line from Hannah King and Lucy Burton Brown and some brave aerials from Gemma Nannery paying off in Woking’s favour.

Woking were beaten today by a better side but lessons have been learnt and there is progress and most importantly there is a determination to continue improving.
