Woking Ladies 1s v Marlow 1s

0 -1

Woking Hockey Club, Wishbone Way, Goldsworth Park

Full of confidence following a well-earned point against Surbiton last week, Woking L1s were back in action at Goldsworth Park against promotion chasing Marlow who were 2nd in the league having beaten East Grinstead the previous week.

Woking started the match with high intensity immediately putting Marlow under pressure, pinning them in their own half through the forward line of Blythe, Smith and White. Despite the pressure Woking were unable to create any clear-cut chances.

In the 22nd minute a Woking hit out from defence was intercepted by Marlow on the right-hand side of the pitch and passed to ex-England international Jane Smith who drove into the circle and placed an excellent shot into the bottom left of corner of the goal, giving Derman no chance of saving it.

Woking heads did not drop and some good link up play from Pepall and the forwards created the first of short corner of the match for Woking. The strike was well saved by the keeper and clearer by Marlow. The remainder of the 1st half was spent in the Marlow half of the pitch but again Woking were not able to capitalise on the circle entries or 2 penalty corners that they won.

A positive halftime talk from Campling drew out the good possession and circle entries that Woking had displayed but urged the team to have confidence to drive into the circle and shoot for the 2nd half.

Marlow started the 2nd half brightly with a tactical change of Smith moving from midfield to the forward line. The Woking defence of Stone and Burton-Brown recognised the change and did an excellent of job of making this key influential player for the next 35 mins.

Woking continued to have the majority of possession with excellent work rate all over the pitch as they pushed to get the equaliser. With 5 mins remaining the opportunity came when Smith got in behind the Marlow defence and received the ball on the right baseline. She drove at pace into the circle and slipped the ball past the GK to O’Brien who unfortunately put the ball wide of the goal.

The post-match statistics showed how much the Woking team has progressed this season and this performance indicates that with 5 matches remaining; 4 against teams in the bottom half of the league, there is still real belief that the team can save themselves from relegation.
