Goals from Tom Davis and skipper Silvio Sorce earn Reds impressive victory to go 3rd in the table.

After the farce that was last week's game against AFC Ripley it was nice to get back to business on a nice pitch and in suitable weather.

Our opponents sat 3rd in the table going into this game and were coming off the back of a draw against League leaders AFC Meadow. We knew this was going to be a stern test.

For the first 10 minutes or so Uni showed just why they have enjoyed such a consistent start to the season. They kept the ball well and pegged us back in our own half. We managed to come through the spell of pressure thanks to a good save by Damian Lynch (pictured) and a goal saving block on the line by James Simpson.

Our first opening saw Richard Crosby of all people denied by a top save by their keeper, but the pass to Joey Stevens was perhaps the better option.

Joey was the next to go close for us having been set free by Jay, but his shot was pushed wide of the post by the keeper.

It was a fine half of football that went from end to end and both sides were playing some really nice stuff. This was football as it was supposed to be played, but thanks to the goalkeepers there were no goals at the interval.

At the start of the second half Uni came close again to taking the lead. They won a free kick just outside our box which was well taken, but Damo lunged to his right to palm it away and then got back up to deny the follow up with a fantastic block. This was a crucial double save.

Also while we found ourselves briefly down to 9 men as Ashley Ellis was forced off with a recurrence of his hamstring injury and Luca Mortellaro was being treated for a bleeding lip, Damo tipped a misdirected cross onto the post as Uni pressured us.

Thankfully we battled through this tough spell and soon after scored the all important opener.

Richardy won the ball and surged forward, finding Joey down the left flank. Joey turned inside his man and laid the ball of for Tom Davis who coolly sidefooted past the keeper with a clinical finish.

A few minutes later it was 2-0. Robbie Wilson's corner was spilled and Silvio Sorce managed to prod home to double our advantage.

Uni became a bit ragged after this and we had 3 chances to put the game to bed. First Luca's shot was tipped onto the post by the keeper after he had stolen the ball off their defence, then Joey fired wide when well placed and finally Joey's low cross was nearly sliced home by a Uni defender, but the keeper saved again.

We were though looking composed at the back until the 89th minute when a second free kick was given away and this time was expertly curled beyond Damo's reach.

Uni had a late free kick that they crossed into the box, but Damo was there to punch away and the referee blew up for full time.

This was a game that could have gone either way. It was a compelling encounter between two teams that played the game in the right manner. We got the all important breakthrough and then went from strength to strength.

All in all I just felt we were that little bit better in all areas and therefore deserved to edge the game. Uni had a couple of very good players going forward so our defence must be applauded. Dan Cox was particularly impressive, while Damo had what was in my opinion his best performance for the club bar the semi-final penalty shootout heroics from last season.

Everyone played well, including both Dan Wicks and Steve Holbrook who did well as substitutes, in what was a terrific team display and a fantastic result.

We now sit 3rd going into next week's clash with leaders Meadow where we will be determined to give a better account of ourselves this time round and maybe spring a surprise.

Well done to all involved. We are already just 1 win short of last season's total and 4 points behind the points tally. There are still 9 games remaining.

MoM - Damo - Made 3 or 4 vital saves, especially at 0-0. Coxy also excellent.

Thanks to Ash for doing a bit of filming towards the end.
