Sloppy Moments Cost WWFC

WWFC slipped to their first defeat in 2013 as they were made to pay for some sloppy moments and poor decision making.

Despite not playing or training for a couple of weeks we came flying out of the blocks this morning and took a deserved early lead.

Toby Maher swung over a decent cross from the right that was misjudged by the Uni Strollers defender. Luca Mortellaro got hold of the ball, cut inside and dispatched a similar finish to his goal against Brookwood two weeks ago.

After 15 minutes or so Uni began to come into the game and their stand out player outpaced our backline and finished clinically past Damian Lynch after 25 minutes.

We were soon back in front as Robbie Wilson's expertly delivered free kick was diverted into his own net by a defener as Silvio Sorce pressurised him. It may have taken a slight flick off Ski's head before hitting the Uni man, but I cannot see it in the video (given both of you an assist).

Unfortunately we could not hold on until half time as a rash tackle by Silv lead to a penalty that their striker thrashed home leaving Damo no chance for his 2nd of the game.

As well as we started the first half, we were just as poor at the start of the second. Silv dallied on the ball in our corner, got tackled and Uni eventually scored via a cruel deflection.

We had a couple of good chances to level as James Simpson got in behind, but the keeper made a good save with his feet and Luca had an effort cleared off the line.

It was Uni though who got the all important next goal as Giles Smith's weak headed clearance was duly punished to kill the game off.

Our efforts to get a goal back only produced a couple of half chances and Uni saw out the remainder of the game.

This was a sloppy, rusty display from us which was a shame given how well we played in the first 20 minutes.

The game was largely even and lacked quality, but Uni made less mistakes than us and were able to punish our errors.

We are evenly matched with Uni and both sides have taken 3 points from the two games this season which I'd say is fair enough.

Importantly we did get a game under our belt, which will serve us well ahead of our big Cup game next week. Our opponents won't have played for 3 weeks which may give us an advantage.

Time to switch focus to that and remember how good it was to get to the Final last season.
