Reds unfortunate to lose to Putney Lions, but only have themselves to blame.

Woking & Weybridge's County Cup run came to a premature end at the hands of Putney Lions in Round 3.

This was true sucker punch football as Putney scored with their only two meaningful attempts of the match, whilst we missed several clear cut chances, forced the keeper into some good saves and hit the bar.

It just wasn't our day in front of goal. In the first half especially we could have been 3 or 4 up by the time we conceded a really poor goal 30 seconds short of half time.

In the second half the keeper made some good saves before Lions hit us on the counter attack and their striker finished with real aplomb.

With 10 minutes left we finally got ourselves on the scoresheet when Tom Davis capped off a fine individual display with a stunning free kick from 25 yards (video on Youtube channel). Adam Miles laid the ball off for him.

Joey Stevens came agonisingly close to forcing extra time, but his left foot effort went inches wide.

Despite being the much more creative team, we were undone by our opponents clinical finishing and our own profligacy.

We have been missing too many chances recently and today it caught up with us.

I think we should be happy with our Cup run, overcoming two strong teams, before bowing out unluckily today. This was not a competition we had any realistic hopes of winning, but it has been good to get 3 extra games and 2 wins under our belts.

This result certainly should not effect our confidence. We have won 3 on the spin in the league and if we can win our last 3 matches of 2013, all in the league, we will set a new club record win streak.

What is clear is we will need to be more ruthless next week at Chertsey Harriers.

MoM - Odgie - involved in a lot of our good play, a driving force and scored a stunning free kick. Back 5 were solid again (thanks to Ski for deputising for Damo - sorry you barely touched the ball) and all of our attacking players were lively.
