Reds Cling On

As with our previous visits to Gordon's the pitch left a lot to be desired, but it was at least full size this time, although very slopey. With a beautiful 4G pitch visible it was frustrating, but not as frustrating as it has been for the home side who haven't been able to use it yet due to contractor error.

Shooting down hill in the first half, not much really happened in the first half an hour or so. Gordon's had the best chance but fired over after an error at the back let them in. Our best moment saw a superb sliderule pass by Grouty get Zammo in behind, but their defender made a great last ditch block.

On 29 we went ahead. Charlie threw in from the left, Grouty won the header and Zammo nodded past the keeper.

3 minutes later we doubled our lead. Oli won a free kick 25 yards out and Luca's low strike went round the wall and evaded the keeper at his near post.

There was plenty of work to be done in the second half with Gordon's having the slope, but we looked set for the win when Luca found Zammo in the box and he converted to become the 6th player in our history to score a half century of goals for the club.

Gordon's continued to press and Josh made a couple of good saves to keep them at bay, but they did get one back just after the hour mark from a corner.

From here we really seemed to run out of steam and the rest of the game was a struggle. Gordon's got another back with 11 remaining, again from a set piece.

The last 15 minutes or so was all the home side. Late on the referee stole the show for all the wrong reasons, leaving both sets of players fuming. There was a goalmouth scramble where two Gordon's players really ought to have scored and left no doubt, but Ell managed to clear one off the line before a second effort smashed the underside of the bar. The referee, a full 30 yards away from it, gave a goal, but later reversed his decision when he decided he couldn't award the goal based on a guess. Belatedly the decision went our way and we hung on for the win.

If Gordon's had levelled we couldn't have argued that it wasn't deserved as we really struggled in the last 3rd of the game. That's 10 league games unbeaten now, but we will have to up our game for the remaining fixtures and have bigger squads to utilise as well.
