Century of Goals
By Giles Smith
John Roberts nets our 100th goal of the season as a we complete a double over a decent Milford Green side.
This was a tough game at Witley Rec, but we did enough to secure a record equalling 10th league win in a row.
For the first time this season we were able to name an unchanged 11 so Gibbo stuck with the team that dominated against Gordon's a week prior.
We were ahead after 4 minutes. Wicksy's cross from the right was only cleared to Sam on the edge of the box and he thumped a low effort past the keeper for his 13th goal of the season.
Milford then had a good spell where their pacey striker fired wide twice, whilst Luca was denied by a good save at the other end.
On 23 minutes we doubled our lead from the reliable source that is Sam's throw to Grouty's head. This delivery was one of Sam's best on a huge pitch as he flung it to the backpost where Grouty's downward header beat the keeper.
Our hosts had a shot saved by Ryan, but their player did look offside in the build up. John went close for us, but headed over from a well delivered corner by Joey.
At half-time the game wasn't over, but a little over a minute into the 2nd half it surely was.
Ell read the game well to thwart a Milford attack and found John who surged forward at pace down the right. He slipped a pass in behind for Sam and although his cutback was cleared, Sam picked up the loose ball and crossed to John in the box who controlled neatly on his chest before lashing into the far corner in clinical fashion. John's 7th goal of the season and Sam's 16th assist. It also took us to the century mark for goals this season - a mark we have never previously hit.
This has usually become the point where we really force home our advantage and add to our goal tally, but credit to Milford they stuck at it and it always remained a competitive game.
On 55 Joey, Chaz and Grouty linked well down our left and the latter clipped a good ball into John who saw his shot well saved.
Luca was next to go close but saw a well struck left footed effort really well blocked.
We did have the odd sloppy moment at the back, but Milford were unable to take advantage, missing the target twice when well placed and Jay was on hand to clear a lobbed effort off the line.
On 84 Milford got the goal their efforts deserved, but they were unable to exert any real pressure after that as we saw the game out well. John nearly made it 4, but saw his shot hit the underside of the bar late on.
This was a difficult test against a good Milford team on a huge pitch that wasn't in great condition. We did a professional job to keep the run going.
MoM: Charlie - in a fine run of form and continued that here. Used the ball well and solid in defence. Mention for Sam who's goal and assist output continues to be outstanding.
Thanks to Richardy and Wicksy for running the line.
