Having lost six key players in pre-season, several of those cherry picked by teams from levels above, Wolves travelled with a young side with three debutants – Fergus Pickles, John Blackah and Taylor Fereday. However, it was not all doom and gloom as strong preseason performances had given good reason for hope.
Wolverhampton started brightly and controlled the first ten minutes of the game with little reward. Burton’s defence was strong and organised and would not yield to the steady black attack. Once the home side claimed some possession and territory it was clear there was to be only one winner in the game.
With three quick fire tries Burton raced into the lead and continued to build up a 30+ point advantage by half time. Their dominance in set play was also matched with a strong, quick back line that looked dangerous all over the park.
Wolverhampton rallied in the second half to keep the score down and even enjoyed large periods of territorial advantage. Unfortunately, they were not able to cross the whitewash.
Burton scored three more tries and continued to dominate despite being down to 13 men at one point.
To summarise Wolverhampton were well beaten by a team many will expect to be top two come the end of the season.
Burton 52 – Wolverhampton 0
Next Saturday Wolves welcome old adversaries Camp Hill at Castlecroft for a 3pm kick off.
In the other club fixtures this weekend the 2’s had a home walkover as Bournville could not raise a 2nd xv, our 3s beat their counterparts from Bridgnorth by a healthy margin. (apologies for not having the exact score)
