MATCH REPORT BY: GUY WALES
This week Woodford played against Wanstead. The game started as per usual with any Woodford game, us conceding a try within the first 10 minutes. But Josh Jerrard came in with an amazing run to get us a try as well, Matthew Unwin also got the conversion the game went back and forth until the second half, with Wanstead scoring and us returning the favour, but thanks to Matthew’s conversion we were 2 points ahead. The teams were pretty well matched.
The second half had just begun, the team encountering many changes, Fin JR, Keelan, Ryan, Freddy, Alfie, Ethan, George and Guy all coming onto the pitch, the amount of subs meant the team had to come together quickly, but only after we conceded another try did the second half really begin. After a successful kick into their half we sped into action, rucking over and passing the ball out, Henri Hobbs went for a run and put the ball down over the try line, only for the try to be disallowed, held up by Wanstead. We were pushed far back into our own half, so far that only a saviour could get us back up into their half again, that saviour came..... Guy Wales. The ball was passed along the line after successfully rucking over the ball thanks to our forwards, Guy stayed behind though, the ball graced his hands, he looked to his left, a back who surely shouldn’t get the fame for scoring another try, he looked forward and to his surprise no one was there, he stepped inwards and completely surprised, the other team, his own team, the ref, the subs, the coaches and himself. He gained 20 yards leaving only destruction in his wake. The team ended up scoring from that play. In the end after scoring another try (Joshua Jerrard) and some “not straight” uncontested line outs, the game came to a close. Woodford taking home another victory Woodford – 24 : Wanstead – 17
COMMENT BELOW FROM HEAD COACH: DAN HARDING
A fantastic full team effort this Sunday and a great win against local rivals.
A dominate Woodford pack never let Wanstead get a foot hold in the scrum or at the rucks, tenacious half backs disrupted any free flowing play from the base and some great strong, straight running rugby from our backs, an all round complete package!!!
A few handling errors (20+ knock ons) handed Wanstead some soft tries, which is something we need to work on.
Defence was unbelievable, with our centres snubbing out any attack with rib shuddering tackles, one which took out man, ball and the linesmen, great tackle!!
Well played lads, and great leadership from our two captains on the day.
The clearance kick to end the game by a certain back row player had all coaches with either hearts in their mouths or working out a suitable fine........
See you all at training
Dan
