Former Woolston Rovers graduate Tyrone McCarthy is set to play in his fourth Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium when his Salford Red Devils side take on Leeds Rhinos this coming Saturday afternoon.
McCarthy, who played his Junior rugby in the Green & Gold before signing for hometown club Warrington Wolves, will become the first Woolston player to appear in four Challenge Cup Finals should he be selected in the matchday 17. Currently he jointly holds the most Final appearances by an ex-Rovers player with Chris Riley.
Tyke made his first appearance in the Wembley showpiece in 2009 for the Wolves against Huddersfield Giants, in what was only his third appearance in the first team and he then lined up against Leeds Rhinos in 2012 capping off a great afternoon with an excellent try. His third appearance came in 2015 when he captained Hull Kingston Rovers in their defeat against the Rhinos.
McCarthy will be hoping to claim a third Challenge Cup Final winners medal to move alongside Riley who was alongside McCarthy in the victorious Wolves side in 2009 and 2012 and also played in the 2010 success over Leeds.
Everybody at Woolston Rovers wishes Tyke and the rest of his Salford teammates the very best of luck on Saturday.
