Woolston Rovers ‘A’ recorded a narrow but fully deserved victory over close rivals Crosfields ‘A’...

...in the NWML Division Three at Monks Sports Club on Friday evening.

Rovers opened the scoring after four minutes when stand off Craig Middlemore forced his way over on the right from dummy half after second row Jack Harper had been held just short. Full back Steve Arnold converted but Crosfields replied five minutes later when the ball was sent along the line to winger Lewis Perrin who went over from five metres out in the right corner.

With fifteen minutes remaining in the first half a Crosfields handling error when in a good position saw Rovers winger Jack Holt pounce on the loose ball and race eighty metres to score in the right corner and give his side a 10-4 half time lead.

Ten minutes into the second half Rovers increased their advantage when a bullet pass from Middlemore found winger Patryk Mazur who collected the ball superbly to crash over wide out on the left but eight minutes later the Soap got themselves back into the game when centre Jim Rookes put Perrin over in the right corner.

Rovers had prop forward Richard Potts sin binned just after the hour mark for a high tackle and whilst he was still off the field Crosfields took advantage of the extra man when the ball was sent out wide to substitute Jordan Chilton who scored wide out on the right to narrow the defecit to just two points and set up a grandstand finish.

Two minutes from time the visitors had centre Andrew Little sin binned for dissent and then right on the stroke of full time Rovers were awarded a penalty for a ball steal and Arnold kicked it to complete a hard fought but well earned 16-12 win.

The Man of the Match was awarded to Rovers substitute Mike Ward. He was well supported by stand off Craig Middlemore, prop forward Richard Potts and winger Jack Holt whilst Crosfields were best served by stand off Jack Williams, winger Lewis Perrin and hooker Daniel Lee.
