A return to league matches at Weston's saw the Wanderers make a small step up the league with a Win over Dudley Kingswinford. Worcester were looking to build on some improving form, helped by the inclusion in the team by two returning players from injury vice captains, Tom Dodge and Andy Reid. A late withdrawal by Sam Harper with a migraine allowed for Greg Fincher to step into the back line in a more favoured position in the centre.
Both teams try to play an exciting brand of rugby, with players looking to run from depth and use space. Early exchanges were fast paced, with the Wanderers having the majority of the territory and possession. The Worcester scrum continued with its powerful display witnessed in previous weeks, helping get territory and a good platform to launch attacks from. It was one of Worcesters longest and most consistent backs that opened the scoring with a run in from distance on the far left corner, Olli Medows deserved the score after beating and outpacing 3 defenders. The move to outside centre must have given him the space needed to get up to speed and maintain it to the line. The difficult conversion was slotted by Tom Biggs. The game was not allowed to gain momentum with numerous scrum resets and penalties, but when the ball was in play both teams gave all they had to break down the others defence. One of the Wanderers favourites Paul Burton was on the end of some great play by Dan Patrice to score under the posts, a move that started on the Wanderers 22 and involved pace and vision, all the things Coach Jon Perks is looking for.
Wanderers did not have it all their own way, Dudley scored one of the best set piece scores we have seen so far this season from a line out in the Wanderers 22, early in the second half, with the Dudley hooker going over untouched.
The score line reflects how tense the game was. Both Coaches know that both teams can do better, but for Coach Perks its another step closer to the team potential, and a position in the top half of the table. The Wanders has some great performances again from unseen player, Dan Jones, Chris Griffiths, Scott Pocock all doing the hard graft to make the results happen.
