Barry Brayton (1938 – 2015)

Paul Armstrong22 Jan 2015 - 23:30

We are sorry to report the passing of Barry Brayton who played for Reds in the sixties. He was 76.

Born in Carlisle, Barry joined the Brunton Park staff after leaving school, eventually making his Football League debut for the Blues in December, 1959. His second and third appearances for United would be against Reds in the Christmas derbies.

He scored against Reds on two occasions, both at Brunton Park, but more often than not finished on the losing side in those titanic battles during the sixties.

Barry netted 37 goals for United in 174 starts before switching allegiance from blue to red in early February, 1967.

He made his Workington debut in the biggest match of the ’66-67 season, at home to Middlesbrough. Barry was given the number 7 shirt in this line-up: Rogan, Ogilvie, Tugman, Hale, Lumsden, Butler, Brayton, Spratt, McLean, Kirkman, Tinnion.

Barry made eighteen starts and two substitute appearances in the last few months of that season, but had to wait until the following campaign before opening his Reds’ goal account. It came in a 3-2 defeat at Crewe Alexandra and preceded his finest hour in a Workington shirt.

He netted a well taken hat-trick on 23 September, 1967 when Reds trounced Notts County 5-1 at Borough Park and further league goals followed against Exeter City, Halifax Town, Doncaster Rovers and Brentford. His only ‘cup’ goal for Reds was at Craven Cottage in the League Cup replay defeat at Fulham.

After making 49 starts (plus half a dozen substitute appearances), Barry left Borough Park at the end of the ’67-68 season and joined Netherfield.

He ran a post office and newsagents in Carlisle until retiring almost a decade ago.

Our condolences go to wife Jean and his three daughters.
