Born in Dumfries in September, 1927, William Rex Dunlop started his career with Rangers and also played for Dumbarton during his time in the Scottish game.

He signed for Workington in October 1953 making his home debut in a 1-1 draw against Mansfield Town. In his next three league games he scored in a 1-0 win at Barrow, netted twice v. Bradford City in his second appearance at Borough Park then grabbed another goal in a 2-1 home win against Tranmere Rovers.

For the bulk of his time with Reds, he served under Bill Shankly and never missed a game while his fellow Scot was manager. He became part of the famous Workington half back line of Stokoe/Aitken/Dunlop wearing the number 6 shirt on a regular basis.

Rex was an ever-present in both the 54-55 and 55-56 seasons, completing fifty appearances in each. In March 1956, he converted a penalty in a 4-2 Third Division North win at Carlisle United then, two weeks later, scored from the penalty spot again as Reds returned to Brunton Park and emerged 4-0 winners in a Cumberland County Championship match.

In his three seasons with Reds, Rex made 127 appearances scoring 23 goals in the process.

The funeral service will be held at St. James’ Church, Whitehaven on Friday 7 June at 1115.
