Considering the conditions there was some excellent flowing rugby from both teams. Yarnbury did not have their usual slow start – they were straight into the game from the whistle.
The first half was very close, both teams putting in some hard tackles. The forwards were very strong all morning and this showed with much better rucking and mauling, the coaching and training finally paying dividends. They also had a very strong scrum and won a couple of scrums against the head.
It was very unfortunate therefore that Yarnbury lost a scrum and the Morley scrum half nipped over from 5 yards for a good opportunist try – this was all that separated the teams in the first half.
The second half was more of the same, with some really big tackles coming in from both teams. This was again a very tight half with a single try from Morley being the only score.
All coaches and parents agreed that this was the best rugby played by the team for quite some time. They also all played as a team and worked together, even talking to each other during the game!!
I personally thought the whole team played exceptionally well and was very proud of all of them. I did think that Kaiden Verity had his best game so far, he was easily the best tackler on the field, others to slightly stand out would be Ben Foster and Callum Hillyard.
If we can play like this every week we will give any team a good run for their money.
Comments from Coaches
Wayne Butterfield:
Today was a huge success, Morley are one of the top three sides in Yorkshire and we provided them with a fine game and showed what we can do.
What we have to do now is produce that each week from each player, we can do it and more importantly, the boys should gain in confidence from it. Play like that and results will take care of themselves but we will at a rapid rate move forward.
Jonathan Sutcliffe:
I’d agree - it was great to see the boys play as a unit and enjoy it. Looking forward to next week
