Match report by John Rawson

Yarnbury 8 – Brodleians 52 – Yorks League 1

Yarnbury welcomed back Elis Gomersall back on the right wing and continued with Ethan Perkins in the back row in the absence of the injured Jimmy Cyan. Captain Oliver Cashman returned to scrum half from the back row but the home side were missing regular first teamers in both backs and forwards for this local clash. Bodleian's had recruited well in the off season with Samoan Manu Tusiga in the outside centre berth and Jack Crickmay in at prop from Chicago.

From the first Yarnbury attack Brodleians stole the ball on the left and ran the ball deep into the Yarnbury half and centre Tusiga stole the ball to score in the corner and stand off Danny Wood converted well from the side-line to take the lead. Yarnbury went straight back up the field for second row James Falgate to use his basketball experience to catch from the kick off and for Brodleians to kill the ball but Stand Off Gerard Huss missed the touch with the penalty and the chance was lost. Yarn bury then defended well from another attack but on 12 minutes Brodleians broke away down the left for winger Phil Towns to score the second try but Wood missed the conversion. At this stage Yarnbury took the game to the away side running the ball well and stretching the play to the wings but dangerous winger Elis Gomersall was not left with any room to attack and was well marshalled by the opponents defence. The winger again attacked in field but was brought down short of the line but an infringement gave stand Off Huss he chance o reduce the lead with a penalty. Winger Town added a third try when the Brodleians number 8 Owen Ackroyd managed to recycle the ball in midfield to put the winger away down the left again. Yarnbury were defending ferociously towards the end of the half with the back row of Tom Gilcrist, Ethan Perkins and Russ Gomersall working hard with their tackles but substitute back on Cameron Wrot touching down our wide and Wood again adding he extra’s.

The second half continued in the same vain with Yarnbury working he possession wide but no penetrating the Bodleian's defence whilst the away side increased their lead through prop Alex Dawson converted by Wood before a wood Yarnbury attack and break from back row Tom Gilcrist and from the recycle stand off Huss forced his way over the line for a deserved Yarnbury try but missed an easy conversion which seemed to sum up the home sides efforts against a more experienced opponent.

As he young home side tired they were reduced substitute utility back Stephen Riley forced into the second row for injured Ian Maycock and doing remarkably well in helping to steady the scrummaging. However, Brodleians were not finished and ran in further tries from Danny Wood and two from substitute Ben Barron completed the scoring. Yarnbury flanker Ethan Perkins was bought down short of he line as he home side were denied a consolation.

It is turning into a long season for the Horsforth side until the get more experience players back on the park after injuries.
