Match Report by John Rawson

Heath 38- 12 Yarnbury- Yorks League One

This was the final league game of the season and with both teams safe only points to play for on the tight pitch at Halifax.Heath have strengthened this season particularly in the pack and their big forwards were putting Yarnbury under pressure at the scrums and disrupting the service to the backs.Although, when they had the ball in hand they looked creative but were thwarted on a couple of occasions when wingers Graham Maycock and Lee Mortimer were tackled short and Heath relieved the pressure with high kicks and a quick chase.

Yarnbury had the versatile Scott Benton in the centre for this final league game and captain Oliver Cashman in his usual scrum half spot. Dom Manfredi made a welcome return to the squad as the replacement front row. With kicking a little wayward and the line out lost on several occasions the attacking threat from Yarnbury in the first half was somewhat limited and the first two Heath tries were directly from Yarnbury mistakes firsdtly prop Oliver Cook crashed over from close in and then centre Ezra Hinchliffe followed up a kick with the ball loose on the ground. At 10 –0 for most of the half the game was still there for Yarnbury but they again allowed Heath to counter on the last play of the first half and wing forward Howard Hanks managed to get over the line.Hincliffe converting to extend the home lead at the break.

The second half was played in a similar vain with the Horsforth side unable to get enough of the ball to mount a threat and Heagth forwards were making ground consistently and centre Hincliffe a constant threat down the middle scored a second try and Heath’s fourth Yarnbury were looking on the end of a decisive defeat.Such is the spirit of the Yarnbury side they immediately ht back with tries from left winger Elis Gomersall taking a slick pass on the blind from Ian Maycock to outstrip the defence and score in the corner.Kieran Davies being unsuccessfull with the conversion and then second row James Falgate using his bulk to get over goiung through four defenders and Davies made the conversion.Second row Matt Beasty scored from a rolling maul to round off a good day for the home side and
give the Yarnbury Squad a wake up call for their Yorkshire Shield fixture at Brownberrie Lane on Weds 4th may at 6.30 with only the cup competition left on the fixture list.
