match report by John Rawson

Yarnbury 10 –20 Hullensians – Yorks 1 League

Last week was a watershed for the Yarnbury Club in so much as they needed to turn around recent results and with a never ending supply of young talent they maybe will turn things around with the professional capabilities of Coach Bob Hood and The Yarnbury Coaching Staff.Saturdays looked like a much needed Yarnbury win at one stage only for all the effort and commitment fade and be closed out at full time. However, with the majority of experienced forwards absent through injury the youngsters showed admirable effort and endeavour in a close fought game.Back rows Russ Gomersall and Adam Batson formed an unlikely second row and Calum Fawcett another young player came in as open side flanker alongside Rhys Leighton at No8 and Kieran Lines making up the back three.Yarnbury were lucky to have returning back row Joe Bennett on the bench for his experience.Unfortunately he was called into action from the kick off with an injury to the ball carrier Leighton from the start.

Hullensians were camped in the home side’s territory for the early minutes and scored under the posts after concerted pressure through prop Brian Barron forcing his way over the line Clayton McLeod converting to give Hullensians an early lead Yarnbury were looking dangerous with the ball in hand but saw little possession early on.When they did the final ball was either rushed or penalty advantage was lost at the line out or kicked dead on the full to loose the advantage. It seemed that Hull were destined to get to the break in the lead and this was confirmed when full back Danny Pound missed two penalty kicks when try opportunities were spurned.

Yarnbury got off to a good start in the second half with an early penalty from Pound for Hull handling in the ruck. The makeshift forward eight were looking impressive in the scrums the longer the game went on due to the power to weight ratio of the second row of Gomersall and Batson and the experienced Joe bennett at No8 provided stable ball for the Yarnbury threequarters. It should be said the young wing forwards Calum Fawcett and Kieran Lines got through their share of tackles on the big Hull forwards. The pressure was constant from the Horsforth side as they took control of the game in the third quarter and battered the Hull try line to no avail.Even when they thought a try would be given the referee Mark Dickenson who had a good game ruled held up.Not to be outdone the Horsforth side swept the ball to the right and the final pass finally stuck to hand and winger Alex Clark made the try line and with Danny Pound kicking the conversion the Yarnbury side were in the lead and looking to close out the game. All they had to do was keep the ball tight but when the ball was spilled out wide right Hullensians wing forward Oli Dynan seized on the loose ball to race away unopposed for a devasting try to the away side which went unconverted.

The Yarnbury effort was still there right to the finish but Hull scored late on down the left to increase their lead when winger Josh Langford got over in the corner and at the end of the game Stand Off Calum McLeod converted a penalty to close out the game and ensure Yarnbury did not get a loosing bonus point.Even the opposition felt relieved to take the points and thought the Horsforth side deserved something from the game. With the spirit and effort and maybe a return for several experience forwards the race to the end of the year could have some good fortune for Yarnbury.
